Ten Rescued as Major Sinkhole Breaches English Canal
UPDATE: A dramatic incident unfolded early this morning in Whitchurch, Shropshire, where emergency services rescued ten individuals after a massive 50-metre sinkhole compromised the Shropshire Union Canal. The sinkhole, which began causing significant disruption around 4:22 AM today, prompted authorities to declare a major incident as large volumes of water began spilling onto nearby land.
Emergency responders quickly mobilized to the scene, where several narrow boats were left stranded in the waterlogged area. The Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service reported that they received urgent calls about the canal bank collapse, leading to an immediate multi-agency response. Firefighters worked under challenging conditions, navigating unstable ground and swiftly moving water to ensure the safety of those affected.
“Three boats were caught in the developing sinkhole, and we successfully helped more than ten members of the public to safety,” stated a fire service official. As of 8:30 AM, all individuals have been safely evacuated, and there are currently no reports of injuries or remaining persons on the affected boats.
The fire service established safety zones both upstream and downstream of the sinkhole, employing barge boards and water gate systems to manage the water flow. Scott Hurford, area manager for the fire service, confirmed ongoing efforts to mitigate environmental impacts and protect nearby properties. “We are working closely with partners, including West Mercia Police, West Midlands Ambulance Service, and the Canal & River Trust, to handle this significant incident,” he said.
Residents in the vicinity, including about 12 individuals from nearby moored boats, are being relocated to a welfare center at the former Whitchurch Police Station. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area to facilitate ongoing rescue and recovery operations.
The situation remains stable, with water flow reduced and no further search and rescue activities required as of this morning. However, emergency services continue to monitor and manage the scene to ensure public safety and address any environmental concerns.
As this incident develops, officials will provide updates on their response efforts and the condition of the canal. Stay tuned for more details as we continue to follow this urgent situation.
