Two Men Sentenced to Life for Brutal Murder of Ashley Kline

A tragic incident unfolded in Pennsylvania when a 23-year-old woman, Ashley Kline, was brutally murdered by two men she considered friends. Initially reported missing on December 30, 2013, Kline had informed her family that she was going to a New Year’s Eve party. Instead, she became a victim of a violent crime that shocked the local community and raised serious concerns about trust and safety.

The case began to unravel on January 8, 2014, when a jogger discovered personal items belonging to Kline in a secluded area of woodland. Among the items found were a pink Ugg boot and a small handbag containing her identification. Kline had a history of learning disabilities due to childhood lead poisoning, and her family described her as “happy and loving but naive and overly trusting.”

Reports indicate that Kline willingly entered a vehicle driven by Ryan Matthew Schannauer, believing he was taking her to the movies. Instead, Schannauer and his accomplice, Adam Morning Star Lynch, drove her to the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area, where they subjected her to a horrific ordeal. The two men beat, stabbed, and ultimately set Kline on fire. Assistant District Attorney Christopher Lechner stated that Schannauer admitted to dousing Kline with petrol while she was still alive.

Despite pleading guilty to homicide, arson, abuse of a corpse, kidnapping, and conspiracy, neither man could explain the motive behind their actions. Schannauer, when questioned, stated, “I don’t have an explanation for it.” This lack of remorse added to the chilling nature of the crime.

Kline’s father, Michael Kline, initially believed his daughter was at a friend’s house for a sleepover. However, the truth was far more sinister. Schannauer had harbored feelings for Kline, but she had expressed a desire to remain friends. The rejection allegedly fueled his rage, leading to the premeditated plan to murder her.

Investigators uncovered significant evidence linking both men to the crime. Surveillance footage showed Lynch filling a jerry can with petrol at a station near the scene. During police interrogations, both men attempted to shift the blame onto each other. However, crucial evidence from Lynch’s car included a broken necklace belonging to Kline and an imprint of her Ugg boot, solidifying their involvement.

The case drew widespread media attention, with District Attorney Craig W. Stedman describing it as “one of the most horrific crimes we have had in our history.” The prosecution presented a timeline indicating that Schannauer and Lynch had plotted Kline’s murder for months, culminating in the tragic events of December 30. Following their guilty pleas, both men received life sentences without the possibility of parole.

As of now, Kline’s family continues to grapple with the loss of their daughter. The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can lurk behind seemingly benign friendships and the devastating consequences of misplaced trust.
