UK Faces Rare Red Weather Alert as Storm Goretti Approaches
UPDATE: The UK is bracing for extreme weather as the Met Office has issued a rare red weather warning due to the impending arrival of Storm Goretti. The alert affects the Isles of Scilly and Cornwall, in effect from 4 PM to 11 PM today, January 8, 2023.
Authorities are warning of “dangerous, stormy winds” potentially reaching speeds of up to 100 mph. In an unprecedented move, the UK government has dispatched Emergency Text Alerts to residents in the affected areas, with the first alert sent at approximately 3 PM and a follow-up scheduled for 5 PM.
A statement from the Met Office declared, “In light of the damaging winds and associated disruption, the Cabinet Office is issuing two Emergency Alerts to people in affected areas.” This severe weather poses a significant threat, with expectations of roofs being blown off, flying debris, and fallen trees across the region, alongside “very large waves” battering the coastline.
The impact of Storm Goretti is already being felt, with travel disruptions anticipated. Irish Ferries has adjusted sailings between Holyhead and Dublin to avoid the worst of the winds, while some flights to mainland Europe are experiencing delays, though Dublin Airport has not yet reported cancellations.
Emergency Alerts, a rare occurrence in the UK, have already pinged approximately 500,000 mobile phones in the affected regions, sounding alarms to ensure public safety. The UK Government is coordinating with local authorities and emergency services to manage the situation effectively.
Meanwhile, an amber warning has been issued for parts of Wales, anticipating heavy snowfall on Thursday night into Friday morning, with snow depths potentially reaching 30 cm in certain areas. Avalanche warnings have also been raised for Yr Wyddfa, known as Snowdon, in Gwynedd.
In contrast, Ireland has been experiencing milder weather, though temperatures have dipped below freezing. Met Éireann indicates that Storm Goretti is likely to miss Ireland, but unsettled weather conditions are expected to persist.
As the UK prepares for the worst of Storm Goretti, officials urge residents to stay updated and take necessary precautions. The situation remains fluid, and further updates will be provided as the storm progresses. Stay safe and informed as this developing story unfolds.
