Urgent Appeal for Information on Imelda Keenan’s 32-Year Disappearance
UPDATE: Today marks the 32nd anniversary of the mysterious disappearance of Imelda Keenan, and Gardaí are urgently appealing for new information. Imelda, then just 22 years old, vanished from Waterford on January 3, 1994, and authorities are determined to break the “silence” surrounding her case.
Imelda Keenan, originally from Mountmellick, Co Laois, was last seen at approximately 1:30 PM on the day she disappeared. She left her apartment on William Street and was spotted crossing at the corner of the Tower Hotel and Lombard Street. Her brother, Edward Keenan, reported her missing the following day, launching a decades-long investigation.
Despite extensive inquiries, including over 80 witness statements, there have been no sightings of Imelda since that fateful day. Superintendent Gavin Hegarty reiterated the call for anyone with information to step forward, stating, “The silence surrounding her fate remains unbroken.” He urges anyone with leads to contact the Waterford Garda Station at (051) 305 300 or the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111.
To aid the investigation, Gardaí have circulated a computer-generated image depicting how Imelda might look today if she is still alive. This new visual element is part of their ongoing efforts to engage the public in this cold case.
Imelda was described as having a quiet demeanor, a passion for music, and strong family ties. Her family has campaigned tirelessly for more attention on her case, even requesting that it be classified as a murder inquiry—an appeal that has been declined by investigators. They have pointed out peculiar circumstances, such as unopened Christmas gifts found at her home, leading to further questions about her disappearance.
Two years ago, a public meeting held to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Imelda’s disappearance revealed additional concerns, including allegations that family visits to her apartment during Christmas 1993 went unanswered. Gardaí have maintained operational silence regarding specific evidence related to these claims.
As the investigation continues, the Keenan family remains hopeful, and the public is encouraged to engage with this urgent appeal. Every detail, no matter how small, could prove essential in uncovering the truth behind Imelda’s disappearance.
Spread the word and share this urgent appeal—together, we can help bring closure to this long-standing mystery.
