URGENT UPDATE: An emergency ‘Armageddon alert’ is set to sound on some phones in Ireland tomorrow, September 7, 2023, at 3 PM as part of a significant testing drill for the UK’s Emergency Alert system. This alert, which will be audible even on silent devices, is designed to prepare citizens for real-life emergencies.

The alert will issue a loud siren for approximately 10 seconds on mobiles connected to 4G and 5G networks, alongside a flashing message clarifying that it is a test. People in border counties of Ireland may hear this alarm if they are roaming on UK networks, raising concerns about startled drivers. However, those on Irish networks will not be affected.

This test follows the UK’s commitment to regularly assess the Emergency Alert system. The largest deployment occurred during Storm Eowyn in January 2025, affecting 4.5 million people in Northern Ireland and Scotland. Such alerts are crucial for public safety and have previously warned about significant threats, including a 500kg unexploded bomb discovered in Plymouth last year.

Pat McFadden, UK Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, emphasized the importance of this drill, stating, “From major storms to wildfires, this system could save your life in an emergency.” He urged the public to prepare for the test, likening it to a fire alarm that must be regularly tested.

The alert’s message will inform recipients that it is a test and provide guidance on how to react during actual emergencies. It will direct users to the website GOV.UK/PREPARE for additional advice on emergency preparedness.

Residents are encouraged to remain calm and disregard the alert while driving, instead focusing on safe driving practices. The Road Safety Authority of Ireland has advised drivers to find a safe location to pull over if they receive the alert while on the road.

This test is part of a broader strategy to enhance national safety protocols. Similar alert systems are already operational in countries like the US, Canada, the Netherlands, and Japan, indicating a global shift towards improved emergency communication.

As the drill approaches, the public is urged to mark their calendars and share this critical information with friends and family. Your awareness could make all the difference in a genuine emergency situation.

Stay tuned for the latest updates and ensure you’re prepared for the unexpected.
