Urgent Call to Curb Antibiotic Use as Drug Resistance Surges

UPDATE: New reports confirm that antibiotic use is surging across Europe, with alarming implications for public health. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has issued an urgent warning that many countries are failing to meet critical targets for reducing antibiotic consumption, exacerbating the threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

As of 2024, the average antibiotic consumption in the EU reached 20.3 daily doses per 1,000 residents, a worrying 2 percent increase from pre-pandemic levels in 2019. This figure is significantly above the EU’s target of 15.9 daily doses by 2030. Countries like Greece lead the pack with a staggering 29.9 daily doses, while the Netherlands reports only 9.8 daily doses.

The ECDC highlights that overuse of antibiotics contributes to over 35,000 deaths annually in the EU and its associated states, including Iceland and Norway. Countries such as Austria, Belgium, and Spain have seen increases in antibiotic prescriptions since 2020. Evelyne Jouvin Marche, a researcher at Inserm in France, stated, “The rollout between countries is not exactly the same,” indicating that the adoption of health protocols varies significantly across the region.
