Urgent: Cattle Lorry Crashes into Kilkenny Shop, Driver Escapes
UPDATE: A shocking incident unfolded on October 14, 2023, in Callan, Co Kilkenny, as a cattle lorry careened out of control and crashed into a local shop, narrowly avoiding a catastrophic outcome. Just after 5:00 PM, the vehicle, loaded with 26 cattle, moved off without its driver, ultimately smashing through a plate glass window at Mr. Shelly’s premises.
The lorry, owned by local cattle trader Mr. John Armstrong of Talbot Street, Dublin, gained alarming momentum on the busy street. Mr. W Dow, the driver, experienced a harrowing moment as he attempted to jump back into the cab. Witnesses report that he was mere seconds away from being crushed against a wall as the lorry sped past.
The runaway lorry didn’t just stop at the shop; it also collided with a parked vehicle belonging to Mrs. Maisie O’Shea, who operates a hairdressing business nearby. Fortunately, no pedestrians or other vehicles were on the street at the time, saving many from potential injury.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic but were relieved that the timing of the incident spared lives. The quick actions of Mr. W Dow were critical, as his decision to leap away from danger likely averted a more tragic outcome.
Local authorities are currently investigating the incident, focusing on how the lorry was able to move without its driver. The community is in shock, with many expressing gratitude that the situation did not escalate further.
As investigations continue, residents and business owners are left to reflect on the close call. Officials urge everyone to remain vigilant and report any unusual vehicle behavior in the future.
