Urgent Heatwave Alert: Temperatures Soar to 30C in Ireland Today

This marks the first official heatwave of the year, with the potential for real-feel temperatures hitting a staggering 45C in direct sunlight.

As the mercury rises, Met Éireann has issued urgent heat warnings, advising residents to prepare for extreme conditions throughout this week. While temperatures peaked at 31.3C in Roscommon last month, this current heatwave is expected to last longer, with forecasts indicating sustained highs above 25C for several days.

The implications are serious. The Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU) is urging the public to use sunscreen to mitigate the risk of skin cancer, the most prevalent form of cancer in Ireland. Additionally, the Road Safety Authority warns that summer increases road hazards due to sun glare, advising drivers to wear sunglasses and ensure their vehicle’s visibility is clear.

“Summertime is the most dangerous time of the year on our roads,” the Road Safety Authority stated.

Significant events, such as the Oasis reunion gigs at Croke Park this weekend, will see around 160,000 fans braving the sun to enjoy the performances. Meteorologist Siobhan Ryan indicated that while the heatwave has not yet officially qualified by Met Éireann’s standards, the current weather patterns show promise of prolonged high temperatures.

“Temperatures are rising and over the coming days, there will be hot sunshine,” Ryan explained. “We could see a heatwave develop, but some areas might also experience thundery downpours.”

Authorities are particularly focused on the risks of forest fires as fire warnings may be issued in response to the extreme heat. The current high-pressure system is expected to dominate the weather across Ireland, with Tipperary likely to be the hottest area.
