Urgent Ice Warning Issued for 10 Counties in Ireland Tonight
UPDATE: A Status Yellow Low Temperature and Ice warning has just been issued for ten counties across Ireland as temperatures are set to plunge below freezing tonight. The warning will take effect from 11 PM today, lasting until 8 AM tomorrow morning, impacting residents in Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wicklow, and Tipperary.
The Met Éireann has forecast widespread frost and icy conditions, with air temperatures falling as low as -3 degrees Celsius in some areas. This alarming drop in temperature poses a significant risk of hazardous travel conditions and potential animal welfare issues.
Local meteorologist Alan O’Reilly warns, “Temperatures will range from -3°C to 6°C, with the highest readings along the coast. A frosty start is expected, so please allow extra time to clear the ice.”
As the cold snap begins, today will remain cold with sunny spells and isolated showers, primarily in the northern and western regions. The highest temperatures are expected to hover between 3°C and 7°C, accompanied by a light to moderate northwesterly breeze.
Looking ahead, tonight will transition into a clear but very cold evening, with temperatures plummeting between 0°C and -3°C. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and take precautions against the icy conditions.
Friday morning is forecasted to begin dry but will quickly turn cloudy, with rain developing along the Atlantic coastal counties in a freshening southwesterly breeze. Temperatures will rise slightly to a range of 5°C to 9°C in the afternoon. However, rain and drizzle will spread through the country overnight, particularly heavy in the west.
Saturday is expected to start wet and cloudy, with rain gradually clearing to the east by late morning. Afternoon conditions will see some dry weather but remain overcast, with showers likely to push in across Munster and South Leinster later in the day. The highest temperatures will reach between 6°C and 10°C.
As this severe weather unfolds, officials emphasize the importance of staying safe on the roads and ensuring adequate preparations for homes and pets.
Residents should brace for continued unsettled weather into next week, with rain expected to persist but temperatures remaining around average.
Stay tuned for updates as this story develops and prioritize safety during these icy conditions.
