UPDATE: New social welfare increases announced by Donegal Deputy and Minister of State Charlie McConalogue will provide immediate financial relief to vulnerable households across Donegal. Starting January 1, 2026, these payments are set to benefit over 1.5 million people nationwide, with thousands in Donegal receiving crucial support.

The government has confirmed a €10 increase in all core weekly social welfare payments, alongside significant boosts in Child Support Payments. For children aged 12 and over, payments will rise by €16 to €78 per week, while those for children under 12 will increase by €8 to €58 per week.

Additionally, the weekly fuel allowance will see a €5 increase, raising the payment from €33 to €38 per week. The income thresholds for the Working Family Payment will also increase by €60 per week, and the monthly rate of Domiciliary Care Allowance will rise by €20, reaching €380 per month.

McConalogue emphasized the importance of these measures, stating,

“The new increases will assist those most in need during the ongoing cost of living pressures. These comprehensive budgetary measures are designed to combat poverty and provide meaningful support to vulnerable households across Donegal.”

The Minister further highlighted that these increases reflect the government’s commitment to protecting households, pensioners, carers, and individuals with disabilities. He added,

“From January 1st, we are ensuring that direct, impactful financial support reaches the people who need it most.”

This substantial investment is a key component of Budget 2026 and aims to provide a significant boost to household incomes during challenging financial times. The government is keenly aware of the financial pressures facing families and is dedicated to fostering a fairer, more inclusive society for all citizens in Donegal and across Ireland.

As these new payments roll out, families in Donegal can expect immediate relief to help navigate the ongoing economic challenges. The next steps will be crucial as the government monitors the impact of these increases on local communities. Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops.
