Urgent: Red Weather Alerts in Spain as Flooding Strikes Costa del Sol
UPDATE: Severe flooding has triggered red weather alerts across parts of Spain, particularly impacting the popular tourist destination of the Costa del Sol. Authorities have confirmed that conditions are expected to worsen as torrential rains continue, raising alarming concerns for local residents and travelers.
The National Weather Service issued urgent alerts for 27 regions in Málaga, categorizing the situation as “extremely dangerous.” The areas of Sol and Guadalhorce are among the hardest hit, with flooding levels reaching several meters in height in some locations. Local residents are being urged to stay indoors and avoid riverbeds and flood-prone areas to ensure their safety.
In a post on social media, weather expert Alan O’Reilly emphasized the severity of the situation: “
Extraordinary danger. There may be flooding and sudden rises in water levels. Avoid riverbeds and flood-prone areas.
”
Shocking footage shared online shows vehicles being swept away by the floodwaters, accompanied by dramatic lightning illuminating the night sky. The chaos has prompted emergency responses, and civil protection alerts are being sent directly to residents’ phones, reinforcing the message to remain indoors.
Travelers planning trips to the affected areas are advised to reconsider their plans immediately. Floodwaters have disrupted local infrastructure, causing significant disruptions. With conditions deteriorating, those currently in the region should stay in close contact with local authorities for ongoing updates.
In addition to the red alerts, the Spanish weather forecasting agency has also issued an orange rain alert for regions including Antequera, Axarquía, and Ronda. Travelers should be aware that similar weather emergencies are affecting other regions in Europe, specifically with reports of severe winter storms causing travel chaos in the United States, particularly in New York.
The National Weather Service has declared ice and winter storm warnings across New York state and Connecticut, with heavy snowfall expected to complicate travel plans for many. Flights to and from JFK airport in New York are heavily impacted, with hundreds of cancellations reported due to adverse weather conditions.
As this situation unfolds, it remains critical for those in the affected areas to prioritize safety and stay tuned for further updates from local authorities. Emergency services are on high alert as they respond to the ongoing crisis, and the public is advised to heed all warnings and advisories issued by officials.
For the latest developments, stay connected with local news channels and weather services. Your safety is paramount—please take all precautions necessary during this challenging time.
