Urgent Restrictions Imposed at LUH Due to Norovirus and Flu Outbreaks
UPDATE: Urgent visitor restrictions have been implemented today at Letterkenny University Hospital (LUH) following confirmed outbreaks of norovirus and flu. Infection control measures are now in effect in three wards as authorities strive to protect vulnerable patients.
The Health Service Executive (HSE) announced that visiting restrictions are currently in place in Medical 5, Medical 8, and the Medical Short Stay Ward. These measures are critical to prevent further spread of infection among patients and staff, especially during this peak season for respiratory viruses and gastrointestinal infections.
Hospital management confirmed that visitors may be allowed under compassionate grounds, but only on an exceptional basis. Individuals seeking to visit must contact the relevant ward manager ahead of time to arrange access.
In a statement released this afternoon, hospital officials emphasized the importance of adhering to these restrictions. All visitors are urged to sanitize their hands upon entering and leaving the facility. They are also advised to refrain from visiting if they exhibit any symptoms, including severe gastrointestinal issues or respiratory ailments such as a sore throat, cough, or fever.
“These precautions are vital to safeguarding our most vulnerable patients,” the statement read. “We appreciate the public’s cooperation during this challenging time.”
Authorities are particularly concerned about the impact of these infections, as they can quickly spread in hospital settings. The hospital is currently enforcing strict infection control protocols, which will remain until further notice.
To minimize health risks, visitors are reminded of several critical guidelines:
– Do not visit if experiencing symptoms of diarrhea, vomiting, or respiratory issues until at least 48 hours after symptoms have resolved.
– Clean hands thoroughly with soap and water, especially after using the restroom.
– Use designated visitor toilets located on the ground floor, avoiding patient facilities.
As the situation develops, the hospital urges everyone to stay updated on their vaccines, particularly for flu and COVID-19, to mitigate serious illness risks.
For additional information on vaccine locations, visit the HSE website. The hospital thanks the community for their understanding and support as they work to ensure the safety of all patients and staff during these outbreaks.
