Urgent Survey Reveals 25% of Irish Parents Struggling Financially
UPDATE: A new survey reveals that an alarming 25% of parents across Ireland are currently facing financial difficulties while raising their families. Conducted by Schooldays.ie, this urgent report highlights the pressing concerns of parents regarding expenses, mental health services, and educational support.
Released today, the survey of 1,878 parents indicates that many are struggling with the rising costs of living. Over a quarter of respondents (28%) report spending more than €200 a week on groceries, with 37% spending between €150 and €200. As everyday expenses surge, 23% of families find themselves in dire financial straits, grappling with soaring energy and back-to-school costs.
The mental health of children and families is another critical area of concern. A staggering 58.7% of parents who sought mental health services rated their experiences as poor or terrible, and over 61% reported waiting six months or longer for support. The survey also revealed that 28% of children have needed specialist educational assessments, yet only 8% rated the process as excellent. Alarmingly, 20% found these services to be poor, with 25% rating them as very poor.
Psychologist and parenting expert Dr. Mary O’Kane commended the focus on conversation over punishment in parenting styles, stating, “Sitting around the table may seem simple, but it plays a powerful role in building communication skills, resilience, and a strong sense of belonging.” This reflects a significant trend, with nearly 77% of parents opting for discussions rather than physical discipline.
Moreover, parents express concerns about their children’s online safety and mental health, with 72% supporting restrictions on phone use during school hours. While the majority engage in discussions about bullying and consent, a concerning 34% have not addressed topics such as alcohol or drugs, suggesting a gap in essential conversations.
Richard Murphy, owner of Schooldays.ie, emphasized the importance of this survey, stating that it aims to capture the realities of family life in Ireland today. “Families are under immense pressure – from long waits for assessments and mental health services to the rising cost of everyday life,” he noted.
As parents face these mounting challenges, the survey results serve as a critical reflection of the current state of family dynamics in Ireland. With ongoing discussions about free healthcare and housing, 40% of parents expressed a desire for free healthcare for all if they were in charge, highlighting the urgency for comprehensive support systems.
The data provided is vital not only for parents but also for schools and policymakers, as it lays bare the struggles families are facing. This survey could be a catalyst for much-needed reforms and better support for families throughout Ireland.
