Urgent: UHG Faces Overcrowding, Elective Procedures Delayed
UPDATE: The Emergency Department at University Hospital Galway (UHG) is currently facing a critical situation due to severe overcrowding, leading to delays in elective procedures. Over the weekend, more than 400 patients attended the department, highlighting the urgent need for immediate healthcare solutions.
As of this morning, UHG reports 23 patients are on trollies in the Emergency Department, with an additional 20 patients waiting for beds at ward level. The hospital has activated all available surge areas, with 45 patients currently in day wards and the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) awaiting admission.
The hospital is working tirelessly to improve patient flow and reduce waiting times, but officials urge the public to consider alternative healthcare options before attending the Emergency Department. “We request that people only attend the Emergency Department at the hospital if it is an emergency situation,” a hospital statement emphasized.
Due to the ongoing pressures, UHG has announced the postponement of some elective procedures. Urgent and time-sensitive operations will still proceed as planned, and patients affected by delays are being contacted directly. “We acknowledge that these delays are very difficult for patients and their families, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and distress caused,” the statement added.
The hospital is committed to treating all who present at the Emergency Department, prioritizing those who are seriously ill or injured. However, patients who do not require immediate care may face extended waiting periods. All beds in the hospital are currently occupied, which adds to the challenge of admitting new patients.
UHG encourages patients to seek care through their GP or out-of-hours services whenever possible. The Roscommon Injury Unit is available daily from 8 AM to 8 PM to assist with a variety of injuries for adults and children aged five and over.
As the situation develops, UHG remains focused on discharging patients who are ready to leave, aiming to free up beds for those in need of admission. Hospital officials are actively monitoring the situation and will provide updates as necessary. This situation underscores the strain on healthcare services and the critical need for community cooperation during peak times.
Stay tuned for more updates as UHG navigates this urgent healthcare challenge.
