URGENT UPDATE: A devastating fire at the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana has claimed the lives of 40 people, including 15 teenagers, in a tragic New Year’s Eve incident. The fire erupted at approximately 1:30 AM local time, when the bar was bustling with holiday revelers.

Authorities have confirmed the identities of all victims, revealing that the average age of those killed is just 19. Among the youngest victims are a 14-year-old Swiss girl and a 14-year-old French boy. The deceased include nationals from Switzerland, Italy, Romania, Turkey, Portugal, France, Belgium, and a citizen from the UK, France, and Israel.

Local officials have launched a criminal investigation into the bar’s management, focusing on the actions of a French couple operating the venue. Tragically, one of the victims, Charlotte Niddam, aged 15, was working as a babysitter at the resort. The UK’s Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper described her passing as a “devastating loss.”

Additional confirmed fatalities include Tristan Pidoux, Emanuele Galeppini (17), Chiara Costanzo (16), Arthur Brodard (16), and Benjamin Johnson, an 18-year-old boxer who died heroically while trying to rescue his girlfriend.

The fire’s intensity has resulted in 116 injuries, with victims transported to hospitals across Switzerland, Germany, France, Italy, and Belgium for urgent care. Among those injured are 68 Swiss, 21 French, 10 Italians, and individuals from several other nations, including Serbia and Poland.

In light of the tragedy, the president of the Swiss Confederation, Guy Parmelin, expressed profound sorrow, stating that many victims were “full of plans, hope, and dreams.” The Federal Council has extended condolences to the families affected and emphasized the national grief shared in response to this catastrophe.

As investigations unfold, Italian officials have announced plans to pursue legal action against the bar owners on behalf of the victims’ families. Gian Lorenzo Coronado, Italy’s ambassador to Switzerland, confirmed that legal recourse is being actively sought.

The impact of this horrific event is felt not only within Switzerland but across Europe, as communities mourn the loss of young lives. The investigation is ongoing, and further updates are anticipated as authorities work to uncover the full circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
