Urgent Update: 45 Violent Offenders on Temporary Release in Ireland
UPDATE: New figures reveal a staggering 45 prisoners with serious or violent offences are currently on temporary release in Ireland, raising urgent concerns about public safety. Data obtained under Freedom of Information by Ireland South MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchu shows that as of June 23, 558 men and women are out on temporary leave from various prisons.
The alarming statistics include 45 individuals convicted of attempts or threats to murder, assaults, harassment, and other violent crimes. Additionally, eight have been convicted of weapons offences, 12 for robbery and extortion, and 20 for offences against the Government. The largest groups released include 144 drug offenders and 125 individuals convicted of theft.
Ms. Ní Mhurchú described the situation as “truly shocking,” stating, “attempted murderers, burglars, violent criminals, and fraudsters are being routinely afforded temporary release when they should be behind bars.” She emphasized that such releases should be limited to non-violent offenders only.
Victims’ advocacy group AdVIC echoed these sentiments, with spokesperson Joan Deane expressing deep concern over the implications for communities. “To potentially bump into someone who has inflicted trauma onto you or a loved one can be extremely distressing,” she noted. Deane criticized the justice system for being “weighed in favour of the offender,” highlighting that victims are the ones serving a “real-life sentence.”
Furthermore, last week, a report from the Inspector of Prisons revealed that overcrowding is causing inhumane conditions for many inmates. The inspector called for “immediate action” from the Government, citing 31 deaths in prison custody in 2024.
The growing discontent among victims and advocates puts pressure on Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan to take decisive action. Deane expressed hope for future reforms, saying, “We are heartened by the efforts he has made so far, and we hope to see him take action in this regard also.”
As the debate intensifies, communities across Ireland are left grappling with the implications of these temporary releases. The urgent call for reform in the justice system is more pressing than ever. Authorities and citizens alike are watching closely for any developments or changes that could impact public safety and justice in the coming days.
