UPDATE: New research reveals that young students are eager to learn the Irish language but face significant educational barriers. The findings, announced by Dublin City University (DCU) in collaboration with the Department of Education and Youth, highlight a growing desire among children to improve their language skills.

The survey, which included over 200 students in primary and secondary schools, indicates a strong interest in the Irish language and its cultural benefits. However, researchers have noted a troubling disconnect between students’ aspirations and the current educational framework. Dr. Aisling Ní Dhiorbháin, one of the lead researchers, stated that while the new educational policy is a “step forward,” it is insufficient in meeting the needs of students.

“Students understand the cultural, cognitive, and employment advantages associated with the Irish language, yet they express frustration at the limited time allocated for speaking Irish both in school and outside of it,” Dr. Ní Dhiorbháin explained to The Journal. The researchers emphasized that the lack of interaction with the language in meaningful contexts is a major challenge.

This urgent issue is particularly pertinent as the new educational policy aims to enhance Irish language education outside the Gaeltacht and is set to be implemented under the Action Plan for Irish in English Medium Schools, due to be published in November 2023.

The reports underscore that students are often overwhelmed by the emphasis on written Irish, primarily through textbooks and exams, rather than fostering conversational skills. “Too much focus is placed on literacy, and students spend excessive time memorizing notes in preparation for state exams, which limits their language development,” Dr. Ní Dhiorbháin noted.

The lack of opportunities to use Irish in everyday life is a critical barrier, according to the students surveyed. “Language acquisition thrives when there are ample chances for conversation,” Dr. Ní Dhiorbháin added, stressing that the current methods of teaching Irish in schools do not support this vital interaction.

Additionally, the research suggests that greater support should be available for teachers. Dr. Ní Dhiorbháin pointed out that many educators lack confidence in their Irish language skills, which ultimately affects their students. “In regions such as the Basque Country and Brittany, teachers have opportunities to immerse themselves in the local languages for extended periods. It’s crucial that we provide similar opportunities for teachers in Ireland to enhance their Irish skills,” she emphasized.

Furthermore, over 100 parents, teachers, and principals contributed their insights to the research, echoing the students’ frustrations with the current Irish education system. Their combined voices reveal a pressing need for a more effective and engaging approach to Irish language education.

The recommendations from the reports include establishing additional policies linked to the European Framework for Languages to enhance language learning. A working group is set to commence efforts on this issue, marking a positive development in addressing the challenges faced by Irish language learners.

As the education landscape evolves, these findings will be crucial in shaping future language policies and ensuring that the next generation has the necessary tools to thrive in Irish. The urgency of this matter cannot be overstated, as it directly impacts cultural identity and language preservation in Ireland.
