Urgent Warning: Migrant Health Workers Face Rising Racist Abuse

New reports confirm that migrant health workers in Ireland are living in fear of racially motivated abuse, prompting urgent calls for action from healthcare leaders. Dr. Liqa Ur Rehman, founder of the Irish Society of International Doctors, expressed that “words cannot describe” the level of anxiety and safety concerns these professionals are facing in the wake of increasing incidents of verbal and physical assaults.

As tensions rise, healthcare workers are taking drastic measures for their safety. Many have formed private WhatsApp groups to coordinate responses if someone feels threatened. Dr. Ur Rehman stated that he has received numerous reports from colleagues who have been verbally abused or physically attacked. He himself has been chased and threatened while walking in a park, leading him to consider leaving Ireland—a sentiment echoed by many in the community.

Healthcare workers are particularly vulnerable due to their irregular hours. Dr. Edward Mathews of the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) noted that “people worry about coming and going from hospital community care areas.” This has led some to modify their behavior, including grouping together when traveling to and from shifts.

The situation has escalated to such a degree that the Indian Embassy in Dublin recently issued an advisory urging citizens to avoid isolated areas and take precautions for personal security. Dr. Mathews remarked that while there has been a response to these incidents, he emphasizes the need for “high visibility prosecution” to deter such unacceptable behavior.

In August, the INMO released a statement condemning racially motivated abuse, stating that it should not be tolerated. However, many migrant healthcare workers have reported losing trust in law enforcement. The Department of Justice responded by emphasizing that the government is committed to combating hate-motivated crime and protecting vulnerable communities. They mentioned the recent implementation of the Criminal Justice Hate Offences Act 2024, aimed at strengthening hate crime laws.

According to the latest government data, 43% of doctors in Ireland received their first medical qualification abroad, with the largest group coming from Pakistan. Among nurses, that figure rises to 52%, predominantly from India. This is significantly higher than in similar countries, like the UK, where only 23% of nurses were educated overseas.

Dr. Suzanne Crowe from the Irish Medical Council highlighted that Ireland has long been regarded as a welcoming place for healthcare professionals. However, she warned that the recent surge in racially charged incidents could deter future staff from coming to Ireland. She noted a troubling trend of doctors facing verbal assaults in public places, which may lead to a decline in the number of medical professionals willing to relocate.

As the situation evolves, Dr. Ur Rehman and his colleagues are urging society to recognize the severity of this issue. “There’s a huge fear and safety concerns in the community,” he stated. “Everyone is preparing to move somewhere else.”
