Volunteers Unite for Annual Christmas Charity Dinner in Dublin
In Dublin, dedicated volunteers are preparing for the annual Christmas charity dinner at the RDS, aiming to support those in need. The event, organized by the **Knights of Columbanus**, will bring together around **550 guests** on December 25, 2025, and will also produce an additional **5,500 meals** for various charities.
The atmosphere was charged with enthusiasm during the volunteer induction day held on December 7th at Ely House. Many eager participants raised their hands for the coveted role of table host. Among them is **Grace O’Dowd**, a long-time volunteer who travels from London each year to take part in the event. Having served in this role for **15 years**, O’Dowd connects with guests and ensures they feel welcome, serving them a three-course meal and engaging them in conversation.
O’Dowd, who works in project management, emphasizes the importance of treating guests with respect and dignity. “If there’s anything we can help with, we do,” she says. Her commitment is evident as she travels to Dublin annually, dedicating her time from December 22 until St Stephen’s Day, when she helps clean up after the festivities.
This year marks the third for **Orla Conlon**, who also serves as a table host. She highlights the significance of listening to guests, noting that this event often provides them with an opportunity to be heard. “You give them that time, you let them speak,” she explains. Conlon balances her volunteer commitments with her job as a senior manager in the civil registration service, and she strives to assist in preparations on December 23 and 24.
**Dara Golden**, another returning volunteer, similarly finds joy in the experience. This year, she will take on the role of bartender, after previously serving drinks. Golden, an artist and organic gardener from Bray, shares her belief that volunteers often gain as much from the experience as the guests do. “You’re thinking about somebody else, and you’re trying to make what could be the only day out of a miserable existence a little better,” she reflects.
Leading the organizing committee is **Trevor Macnamara**, a retired engineer from Kildare, who has been involved with the event for **12 years**. He highlights the extensive preparations that commence as early as September. “Every year, it’s oversubscribed,” he says, noting the enthusiasm of volunteers eager to contribute.
During the induction, a special mass was held in memory of **Brother Kevin Crowley**, the founder of the Capuchin Day Centre, who dedicated his life to helping the marginalized in Dublin. Macnamara recalls how Crowley would visit the RDS on Christmas Day, personally connecting with many guests.
As the Christmas Day event approaches, volunteers are set to provide a warm and festive atmosphere, ensuring that the guests experience joy and community spirit during what can be a challenging time of year. The collaborative effort underscores the importance of compassion and support within the community, aiming to make a positive impact on those who may feel overlooked.
