Waterford’s Winterval Festival Sparks Holiday Cheer with 54 Events
UPDATE: Waterford’s annual Winterval festival, now in its 13th year, is officially underway, transforming the city into a festive wonderland. Running every Thursday to Sunday until December 23, 2025, this year’s festival promises an impressive 54 events, attracting over 1 million visitors last year alone.
The festival has become a beacon of holiday spirit, boosting local tourism and business. With attractions like an ice rink, a Ferris wheel, and vibrant festive markets, Waterford is a must-visit destination this season. Tina Darrer, owner of Dooleys, emphasizes the festival’s impact, stating, “Thanks to Winterval, November and December bookings are through the roof.”
Families can enjoy an array of activities, including a mini express train ride, vintage carousel, and a magical garden illuminated with lights. The highlight is the Winterval Illuminates event, featuring captivating animations and music at Cathedral Square. Additionally, children can meet Santa in the Medieval Museum, where his presence feels genuinely magical.
This year brings exciting new features, including free screenings of the beloved holiday film Elf three times a day at The Reg, and a playful Snow Play dome for children to enjoy. The festival is not just about entertainment; it fosters a sense of community, with local businesses embracing the festive atmosphere.
In addition to Waterford’s Winterval, other festive attractions are capturing attention across Ireland. Elf Town at Dublin’s RDS and Galway promises an immersive experience with a €3.7 million investment, featuring live reindeer, Mrs. Claus’ Kitchen, and more. The event returns after a sell-out year, expanding its offerings to create an unforgettable holiday experience.
Meanwhile, Cork is alive with activities such as the Alpine Skate Trail, which has relocated to Centre Park Road. Visitors can enjoy festive treats while capturing memories with an on-site camera. Wonderlights at Fota House and Wild Lights at Dublin Zoo further enhance the holiday spirit, with stunning light displays and engaging experiences for families.
At Croke Park, Santa Claus is set to host a festive training camp for families, combining holiday fun with sports-themed activities. The GAA Museum will serve as a backdrop for this unique event, inviting families to participate in festive skills challenges.
As excitement builds, Corkmas festivities are also in full swing, with a vibrant opening parade and family-friendly events across multiple locations. The newly developed Counting House Plaza will host free activities through December 21, making it easier for families to enjoy the holiday season.
