Young Farmer Padraig McDonald Dies in St Stephen’s Day Crash

URGENT UPDATE: A tragic road traffic collision has claimed the life of 20-year-old Padraig McDonald from Loughmacrory, Co Tyrone, early on December 26, 2023. The accident, involving three vehicles, occurred shortly before 12:40 AM in Cookstown, leaving two teenagers with serious injuries.

According to the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), the crash began with a collision between a silver and a black Volkswagen Golf. Just moments later, a black Vauxhall Corsa collided with one of these vehicles. Chief Inspector Celeste Simpson reported that the five occupants of the silver Golf suffered injuries at the scene, and tragically, McDonald succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital.

The incident has left a profound impact on the community, as Padraig was not just a farmer but a beloved member of the Loch Mhic Ruairi Naomh Treasa GAA club. In a heartfelt tribute, the club described him as a selfless individual who dedicated much of his time to helping others. They stated, “Padraig will be greatly missed by his family, friends, the club, and the wider community.”

Two teenagers involved in the crash have sustained serious injuries—one with life-changing consequences and another with significant facial injuries. Fortunately, other occupants of the black Golf and black Corsa are reported to be unharmed.

This incident has sparked a call for witnesses. The PSNI is urging anyone with information, particularly those with dashcam or CCTV footage, to contact the Collision Investigation Unit at 101, quoting reference number 30 26/12/25.
