Exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi Calls for Continued Protests in Iran

The exiled Iranian crown prince, Reza Pahlavi, has called on citizens to sustain their protests against the Islamic Republic of Iran, which has governed for the past 47 years. The son of the last shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, urged the populace to continue demonstrations until a transition of power occurs, emphasizing the need for a referendum to establish a new political system.

Pahlavi, now residing in the United States, has positioned himself as a leader for those seeking change. In an interview with Fox News, he stated, “People are calling on me to step in and lead this transition. I’m here to lead and help our nation go through that transition. But beyond liberation, we have to have a plan, a plan for a stable, smooth transition.” Despite his calls for unity among monarchists and protestors, the extent of his support within Iran remains uncertain.

Born in 1960 in Tehran, Reza Pahlavi is the eldest son of the ousted monarch. His family was not originally aristocratic; his grandfather founded the self-declared imperial dynasty after serving as an army officer. The Pahlavi dynasty came to power following the overthrow of Ahmad Shah, the last monarch of the Qajar dynasty, in 1925.

During a lavish coronation in 1967, Pahlavi was designated crown prince. His education included training as a pilot in the United States, but his studies at Williams College were cut short when the 1979 revolution forced his family into exile. He later enrolled at the American University in Cairo, where he did not complete his degree. Ultimately, he earned a political science degree through correspondence from the University of Southern California in 1985.

At the age of 20, following his father’s death, Pahlavi declared himself the shah of Iran. However, the United States did not recognize him, having acknowledged the newly established Islamic revolutionary government. He has since sought to maintain a presence in Iranian political discourse, advocating for a united front among various factions while focusing on the need for a “national resistance.”

In a significant political move, Pahlavi visited Israel in April 2023, becoming the most senior Iranian figure to do so. This visit marked a notable alignment with pro-monarchy sentiments, as Israel recognized him as a key leader of the opposition to the current regime. The Pahlavi family has historical ties to Israel, including collaboration with its intelligence services during the reign of his father.

Iran’s current government has long opposed Israel, citing its support for Palestinian militant groups such as Hamas and Islamic Jihad. While protesters have expressed their discontent with the Islamic Republic’s foreign engagements, they have simultaneously chanted slogans emphasizing national priorities, such as “Neither Gaza nor Lebanon!
