Federal Prosecutors Resign Amid Controversy Over Minnesota Shooting
Six federal prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Minnesota have resigned, citing concerns about the department’s handling of the investigation into the shooting of Renee Nicole Good. Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was shot dead in her car by a federal agent in Minneapolis last week. This incident has sparked protests and intensified scrutiny over the circumstances surrounding her death.
According to a report by the New York Times, the prosecutors expressed frustration over senior Justice Department officials’ insistence on investigating potential ties between Good and her widow, Becca Good, and various activist groups. Additionally, they criticized the FBI for not permitting state investigators to participate in the inquiry. The resignations of these federal attorneys are part of a broader discontent within the Justice Department.
In a related development, four senior civil rights lawyers at the U.S. Justice Department also resigned. Their exit was influenced by their exclusion from the investigation into Good’s fatal shooting by a U.S. immigration officer. These lawyers, who were supervisors in the Criminal Section of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, typically play a key role in federal investigations concerning police use of force.
The head of the division, Harmeet Dhillon, appointed by former President Donald Trump, informed the team last week that they would not be involved in the investigation of Good’s shooting. Sources familiar with the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity, indicated that the decision to resign was not solely based on the Minnesota case. The civil rights lawyers had also been offered early retirement by the Trump administration and felt increasingly disillusioned with the division’s direction, which had shifted to align with the administration’s priorities.
A Justice Department official confirmed the departures, stating that the lawyers had notified the department of their intention to leave the Civil Rights Division and had requested to participate in an early retirement program well before the shooting incident in Minnesota. This series of resignations reflects ongoing turmoil within the Justice Department during the Trump administration, which has seen numerous career officials removed or reassigned, particularly in cases involving investigations of Trump’s perceived political adversaries.
The situation surrounding Renee Nicole Good’s shooting continues to unfold, as community reactions to the incident demand accountability and transparency from federal authorities. Resignations within the Justice Department highlight the internal conflicts and challenges faced by legal professionals navigating high-profile cases that intersect with political interests and civil rights issues.
