George Clooney Responds to Trump After French Citizenship Granted
George Clooney has publicly responded to criticism from US President Donald Trump following France’s decision to grant the actor and his family French citizenship. Clooney, his wife Amal Alamuddin Clooney, and their two children obtained citizenship earlier this month after residing in southern France for several years. The actor praised the country’s privacy laws, which he believes protect his family from media intrusion, and expressed his desire to raise his children away from Hollywood’s glare.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump remarked on the Clooneys’ new citizenship, suggesting that France could welcome the couple due to their political affiliations. He described them as “two of the worst political prognosticators of all time” and criticized what he termed France’s poor handling of immigration issues. “Clooney got more publicity for politics than he did for his very few, and totally mediocre, movies,” Trump stated, further questioning Clooney’s status as a movie star.
Clooney’s reaction came in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, where he aligned himself with President Biden’s vision for America. “I totally agree with the current president. We have to make America great again. We’ll start in November,” he said, referencing the upcoming US midterm elections.
Citizenship Amid Changing Immigration Rules
The Clooneys’ citizenship announcement coincided with new immigration regulations set to take effect on January 1, 2024, which will impose stricter language requirements for those seeking French nationality. Marie-Pierre Vedrenne, a junior interior minister, expressed concerns about potential double standards, noting that Clooney’s French language skills were lacking. “We need to be careful about the message we’re sending,” she told France Info.
Despite the criticism, both the interior minister, Laurent Nunez, and the French foreign ministry defended the decision to grant citizenship. They emphasized that Clooney and his family met the legal criteria for naturalization, citing their contributions to France’s cultural prestige and international influence. The Clooneys’ application underwent rigorous scrutiny, including security checks and regulatory interviews.
The French civil code allows for citizenship to be conferred to foreign nationals who can demonstrate their contribution to France’s global standing. The ministry highlighted Clooney’s role in the film industry and Amal Clooney’s work as a prominent international human rights lawyer, which aligns with France’s values.
Hollywood’s Affection for France
In 2024, approximately 48,800 individuals acquired French nationality through decree, reflecting an ongoing trend among international figures seeking residence in France. Clooney is not alone in his pursuit; acclaimed director Jim Jarmusch recently announced his intention to apply for French citizenship, citing a desire for a refuge from the United States.
Clooney’s family has resided at the Domaine du Canadel, a former wine estate located near Brignoles, since its purchase in 2021. He has expressed that this property is where his family finds happiness, further solidifying their ties to France. Despite acknowledging his challenges with the French language, he stated, “I love the French culture, your language, even if I’m still bad at it after 400 days of courses.”
As the political landscape continues to evolve, the Clooneys’ move reflects a broader narrative of personal and cultural connections that transcend borders, illustrating a unique intersection of celebrity, politics, and global citizenship.
