Greta Thunberg Arrested During London Protest Supporting Hunger Strikers
Greta Thunberg, the renowned Swedish climate activist, was arrested in London during a protest supporting hunger strikers affiliated with Palestine Action. The demonstration took place outside the offices of Aspen Insurance, where Thunberg was seen holding a sign that read, “I support the Palestine Action prisoners. I oppose genocide.” This incident highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding protests in the UK, particularly those connected to Palestine Action, which has been designated a terrorist organization by the British government.
The protest escalated earlier when two activists reportedly vandalized the Aspen Insurance building using repurposed fire extinguishers filled with red paint, symbolizing blood. They subsequently locked themselves to the building. The campaign group Prisoners for Palestine stated that the insurance firm was targeted due to its financial ties to Elbit Systems UK, a subsidiary of an Israeli arms manufacturer.
According to Prisoners for Palestine, the protest was also intended to show solidarity with several prisoners who have been on hunger strike while awaiting trial for alleged offenses related to Palestine Action. At the time of the protest, eight prisoners were engaged in hunger strikes, with the condition of the first two strikers reaching a critical point after 52 days.
Details of the Protest and Arrests
A representative from the City of London police confirmed that damage was caused to the Fenchurch Street building at approximately 07:00 on Tuesday, March 5, 2024. The police reported the arrest of a man and a woman on suspicion of criminal damage. They had glued themselves to the building, prompting the intervention of specialist officers.
Thunberg’s arrest came shortly after her arrival at the protest site. A police statement indicated that she was taken into custody for displaying a placard in support of a proscribed organization, which violates Section 13 of the Terrorism Act 2000. This has raised questions from campaigners about the application of counter-terrorism legislation, especially as thousands have been arrested in recent months for similar demonstrations.
Families and supporters of the hunger strikers have reached out to David Lammy, the UK’s Justice Secretary, urging him to address their demands, which include granting immediate bail to the hunger strikers, lifting the ban on Palestine Action, and easing communication restrictions imposed on them.
Context and Reactions
Thunberg, in a statement regarding her arrest, emphasized the responsibility of the state to meet the demands of the hunger strikers. “It is up to the state to intervene and put an end to this by meeting these reasonable demands that pave the way for the freedom of all those who choose to use their rights trying to stop a genocide,” she stated.
The protest gained momentum following reports that two insurance companies, Allianz and Aviva, had ceased their insurance contracts with Elbit Systems UK and UAV Engines, respectively, after being targeted by Palestine Action. This development has put further pressure on Aspen Insurance, which has faced scrutiny for its ongoing relationship with Elbit Systems.
On March 2, 2024, following public pressure, Allianz announced through RTÉ that it “has no relationship with Elbit Systems and does not engage in any investment or underwriting activity connected to the Middle East.” This statement came as a response to growing concerns over its sponsorship ties and the ethical implications surrounding its business practices.
As the situation evolves, it remains to be seen how the UK government will respond to the demands of the hunger strikers and activists like Thunberg. The unfolding events reflect the complex intersection of activism, legal frameworks, and international relations, particularly concerning issues surrounding Palestine.
