Minnesota Officials Demand State Involvement in Ice Shooting Investigation
Minnesota officials are calling for state involvement in the investigation of the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an officer from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) in Minneapolis earlier this week. The shooting, which took place on a residential street, has sparked significant unrest and raised questions about federal oversight in local law enforcement.
In the immediate aftermath of the incident on March 5, 2025, state and local leaders urged that the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension be allowed to participate in the investigation alongside the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). However, tensions escalated after federal authorities denied state investigators access to crucial evidence, prompting the state’s withdrawal from the case.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey expressed concern over the handling of the situation, stating, “Our ask is to embrace the truth.” He emphasized the need for transparency and urged that the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension be included in the investigation process. Frey fears that the federal government has prematurely determined the shooting to be justified.
The issue intensified when Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem asserted that state investigators do not have jurisdiction in this matter, effectively sidelining them. Legal hurdles would also complicate any potential criminal charges against the Ice officer involved, highlighting the challenges in holding federal agents accountable.
The backdrop for this shooting includes a broader campaign by the Trump administration aimed at increasing immigration enforcement in states governed by Democrats. In response to the shooting, Governor Tim Walz activated the Minnesota National Guard as a precautionary measure, while several public schools in the area were closed.
Protests erupted in Minneapolis, with demonstrators expressing outrage over the shooting and the federal presence in the state. On March 7, 2025, a small group of protesters clashed with federal agents outside a government building, resulting in the use of pepper balls to disperse crowds.
The Department of Homeland Security announced plans to re-evaluate thousands of refugee cases in Minnesota, framing this effort as an initiative to combat fraud. This announcement follows a controversial increase in the number of federal officers deployed to Minnesota, which some local leaders opposed, fearing heightened tensions.
The circumstances surrounding Good’s shooting have been sharply contested. Reports indicate that she was confronted by Ice agents while partially blocking a snowy residential street. Video analysis suggests her vehicle was turning away from the officer who opened fire. The White House defended the shooting as lawful, while local leaders have condemned the federal narrative as “propaganda.”
Democratic leaders in Minnesota have reacted strongly against the federal response. Peggy Flanagan, a state representative running for the U.S. Senate, criticized federal actions, stating, “What we are seeing right now, it’s authoritarianism.”
In light of the unrest, Governor Walz and Mayor Frey have urged protesters to remain peaceful while expressing concern that the Trump administration might be looking for a pretext to deploy federal troops. Residents have reported feelings of fear and anxiety, with many avoiding schools and workplaces since the shooting occurred.
State Representative Esther Agbaje voiced the community’s widespread apprehension, stating, “People are scared. People are not going to school. People are not going to work.” She called for the federal government to reduce its presence in Minnesota to restore a sense of normalcy.
As the investigation unfolds, the situation in Minneapolis remains tense, with ongoing calls for accountability and a transparent investigation into the tragic death of Renee Nicole Good.
