Daithi O Sé Cringes as Western Canada Rose Displays Tattoos and Jokes on Air

The annual *Rose of Tralee* festival took an unexpected turn when co-host Daithi O Sé found himself cringing during a live segment featuring the Western Canada Rose, Ciara Confrey. Known for its celebratory atmosphere, this year’s event showcased contestants from diverse locations, including Philadelphia and Ohio, but it was Confrey’s on-air tattoo display that stole the show.
On the night of August 21, 2023, O Sé, who hails from County Kerry, and his co-host Kathryn Thomas hosted the event for the third consecutive year. As the first 18 contestants introduced themselves, the remaining 14, including Confrey, took the stage. Confrey, originally from Newbridge, is a medical aesthetician who specializes in various treatments, including tattoo artistry.
Prompted by O Sé to discuss her tattoos, Confrey enthusiastically described her self-designed ink. She pointed out a specific quote, revealing, “I actually tattooed this one myself about two and a half years ago.” O Sé’s reaction was immediate, scrunching his face in disbelief, and he asked, “You tattooed yourself?” To which Confrey confidently replied, “Yes, I did.”
This exchange led to a light-hearted banter between the two. O Sé, visibly uncomfortable, likened the experience to “a dentist pulling his own teeth,” questioning the logic behind self-tattooing. Confrey quipped, “Oh, you had to use that descriptive language. Yeah, well, I mean, it was fun.”
The playful atmosphere continued as O Sé jokingly asked if Confrey could “do anything” to improve his appearance. In a humorous response, she bluntly stated, “You need a bit of work, Daithi.” O Sé, momentarily taken aback, pressed for clarification, leading to a series of lighthearted jabs from Confrey.
With a black marker in hand, Confrey drew a unibrow and moustache on O Sé’s face while suggesting he might benefit from some botox. The segment, filled with laughter and good-natured teasing, resonated with viewers. Comments flooded social media, with one viewer tweeting, “The Western Canada Rose giving Daithí an extra dose of the hair transplant was not on my Rose bingo card.”
The spirited exchanges between O Sé and Confrey highlighted the charm of the *Rose of Tralee* festival, balancing the elegance of the event with moments of levity. As the competition continues, viewers can expect more surprises as contestants showcase their talent, personality, and perhaps a few more playful interactions.
