BREAKING: Over 100 participants took to the waters of the River Shannon today, paddling in their own canoes to raise vital funds for Rape Crisis Mid West. This annual event, organized in partnership with the Limerick Kayak Academy, successfully raised more than €8,000 for the charity, which provides essential support to survivors of sexual violence.

The kayaking journey began at the Shannon Rowing Club in Annacotty and ended at O’Callaghan Strand in Limerick City. Participants navigated the river’s ebbs and flows, mirroring the challenges faced by survivors on their healing journeys. A key organizer from the Limerick Kayak Academy emphasized the importance of the event, stating, “The services provided to survivors aim to support each person on their healing journey.”

Siobhán O’Leary, Executive Director of Rape Crisis Mid West, expressed pride in the event marking its 10th anniversary. “We are grateful to all participants, individuals, and businesses that support this initiative every year,” O’Leary said. “Without their contributions, we could not run this event.” The funds raised will directly benefit the organization’s crucial services for survivors in Limerick, Clare, and North Tipperary.

The kayaking event also brought together a coalition of supporters, including Canoeing Ireland, Outdoor Education and Training Centre Kilfinane, Munster Kayak Adventures, and Limerick Sports Partnership. Together, these organizations aim to not only raise funds but also increase awareness of the resources available for survivors of sexual violence.

As the event concluded, participants celebrated their shared commitment to supporting this important cause, which plays a critical role in empowering survivors and fostering healing. The success of today’s event underscores the community’s dedication to addressing the needs of those affected by sexual violence.
