Urgent Alert: Over 100 Fake Irish Shops Target Facebook Users

UPDATE: A massive web of fake online shops targeting Irish Facebook users has been uncovered, revealing over 100 fraudulent websites that deceive consumers into purchasing low-quality goods. This alarming investigation highlights the urgent need for awareness among social media shoppers as these scams proliferate.
According to a recent report by The Journal Investigates, many of these deceptive stores impersonate legitimate Irish businesses, including a fake shop called Morgan Dublin. This particular site, linked to a heartfelt farewell post from supposed owners Patrick and Eileen Morgan, was part of a broader scheme that has misled countless consumers. The couple’s genuine farewell to their boutique in Dublin has been co-opted by scammers using their names to lure unsuspecting shoppers into fraudulent transactions.
The investigation uncovered nearly 95 fake retail pages masquerading as Irish brands, collectively posting over 50,000 ads on Facebook. These scams have reportedly targeted millions of users across 14 countries, with evidence suggesting that many of the websites are operated from abroad, predominantly from the Netherlands.
In many instances, these websites offer steep discounts—some items are advertised at more than 70% off—to create a false sense of urgency. However, customers who have fallen victim report receiving items that are vastly different from what was advertised, often of poor quality and shipped from Asia.
The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has issued a warning about the legality of these deceptive practices. Gráinne Griffin, CCPC’s Director of Communications, stated, “Businesses are not allowed to mislead consumers into making a purchasing decision that they wouldn’t otherwise make.” She urged consumers to report any suspected scams to the appropriate authorities.
A Facebook review from a user who ordered from Morgan Dublin on May 12 revealed their dissatisfaction: “The product was nothing like what was advertised.” Similar complaints have flooded social media platforms, with many customers expressing frustration over not receiving their orders or receiving inferior products mislabeled as genuine.
These fraudulent shops often feature convincing layouts, complete with stock images and fabricated backstories to enhance their credibility. Most are hosted on Shopify, a platform that allows for rapid creation of online stores. While Shopify is utilized by legitimate businesses, it has also become a haven for scammers due to its ease of use.
Many of the ads promoting these websites employ common themes and language, hinting at a coordinated effort behind their operations. The investigation found links to multiple social media pages managed by the same individuals, with admins located in various countries including Mexico and Vietnam.
Despite Meta’s policies against scams, many of these ads remain active, raising questions about the platform’s enforcement of its community standards. A spokesperson for Meta indicated they are collaborating with law enforcement to combat these scams, yet numerous fraudulent pages persist on Facebook and Instagram.
As the CCPC emphasizes the importance of consumer vigilance, it is crucial for shoppers to recognize the signs of these scams. Consumers are advised to be cautious of discounts that seem too good to be true and to verify the legitimacy of online stores before making purchases.
This developing story serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with online shopping, particularly on social media platforms. As authorities and organizations work to combat these fraudulent schemes, consumers must remain vigilant and informed to avoid falling victim to these scams.
