Dr. Ciara Kelly Thrives After Overcoming Major Health Challenges

Dr. Ciara Kelly has expressed that she feels “phenomenal” after successfully recovering from two hip replacements and a severe back injury. The Newstalk presenter, who previously faced significant health challenges, is now embracing an active lifestyle and encouraging others to join her in a charitable campaign.
After a fall caused by a wet floor led to a broken back, Dr. Kelly underwent two hip replacements within just 12 months. Reflecting on her recovery, she shared, “I am in the best shape I’ve been in years in terms of my fitness.”
Dr. Kelly faced considerable limitations during her recovery. She described a time when walking just 100 meters was difficult, requiring her to rely on family members for simple tasks like carrying items upstairs. Now, she is fully committed to regaining her strength and mobility.
“I got to a point before my hip surgeries where I could barely walk,” she recalled. “Once I recovered from all of that I was determined not to throw it all away.” Her dedication has resulted in a newfound vigor; she frequently engages in weight training and walking, even completing the Camino pilgrimage earlier this year.
While a vacancy exists at RTÉ following Joe Duffy’s retirement from the show Liveline, Dr. Kelly clarified that she has no immediate plans to pursue this opportunity. “I’m very happy with my job,” she stated, emphasizing her positive working relationship with co-host Shane Coleman. “I feel lucky and I feel like I’ve landed on my feet.”
Dr. Kelly has had a diverse career path, transitioning from practicing medicine to broadcasting. She remains open to future changes but is currently content in her role. “I know that life doesn’t stay the same, I know that it changes. Change can be brilliant and invigorating, but I’ve no plans for change at the moment.”
Advocating for Health and Community Support
Recently, Dr. Kelly was present at the launch of the “Walk 100km in September” campaign for the Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation, which Life Pharmacy is supporting. The initiative aims to raise funds for nursing care for families with children up to the age of six who have severe learning disabilities and complex medical needs.
Dr. Kelly expressed her enthusiasm for the campaign, noting, “I’m ready and I’m delighted to go flat out. It’s a really good campaign.” Participants are encouraged to complete approximately 3 kilometers per day, which she describes as a manageable goal.
“This isn’t outrageous,” she said. “If you complete the 100 km, it’s like doing your own little personal Camino.” She highlighted September as an ideal time to embark on new habits, aligning with the natural cycle of the school year.
The campaign sets an ambitious target of raising €100,000 to support the Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation. Throughout September, Life Pharmacy teams across Ireland will participate, walking to raise awareness and funds for this vital cause. Dr. Kelly emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, “The Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation is a fantastic cause, and I’ve met some of the families who work with them; they’re amazing people.”
The reality of health services in Ireland often leaves families and charities to pick up the slack, making support for organizations like Jack and Jill all the more crucial. As Dr. Kelly continues to thrive post-recovery, her focus on health and community service highlights the resilience of both herself and the families benefiting from this initiative.
Through her experiences, Dr. Ciara Kelly not only champions personal health but also advocates for broader community support, inspiring others to join in meaningful efforts for those in need.
