Shane Lowry Steady with Round of 70 at Tour Championship

Shane Lowry opened the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta with a steady round of 70. The event serves as the final tournament of the FedEx Cup playoffs, featuring a limited field of 30 players vying for a substantial prize of $10 million for the overall winner. Lowry’s performance included two birdies and two bogeys, placing him in a position where he will need to focus on the tournament, particularly as he is not eligible for Ryder Cup points this week.
As the European Ryder Cup qualifying process concludes at the British Masters on September 3, 2023, Lowry currently occupies the sixth automatic qualifying position. His status is precarious, as he knows that the outcome of the British Masters could significantly impact his chances of participating in the Ryder Cup scheduled for next month in Bethpage, New York. Rasmus Hojgaard, who is currently ranked eighth in the European Ryder Cup standings, has a chance to surpass Lowry if he performs well.
Competition Heats Up at the British Masters
In the British Masters, Hojgaard began strongly with an opening round of 69, placing him tied for 12th, just three strokes behind a group of four co-leaders. Those leaders—Thomas Aiken, Matthias Schwab, Haotong Li, and Marcel Siem—each shot six-under-par 66s. This tournament marks the conclusion of a year-long qualifying process for the European team, led by Captain Luke Donald, as they prepare to face the United States.
Another notable player, Matt Fitzpatrick, is also aiming for a spot on the Ryder Cup team despite being unable to secure an automatic qualification even with a win at the Masters. Fitzpatrick expressed his hopes for a wild card selection, stating, “I’ve done a lot of good stuff in the summer… It means the world to be part of [the Ryder Cup].” He opened the Tour Championship with a score of 67, placing him just one stroke off the pace set by the leaders.
Dermot McElroy Finds Form in Dutch Futures
Meanwhile, in a different competition, Dermot McElroy achieved a remarkable turnaround in his season by leading the Dutch Futures at Spijk. He recorded a bogey-free round of 66, giving him a one-shot lead over competitors Euan Walker and Nathan Legendre. Currently ranked 94th in the Race to Mallorca standings, McElroy is determined to finish the season on a high note with six events remaining before the Rolex Grand Final. He commented, “To be honest, I’ve played terrible all year barring one good result… I’m really pleased with how I am starting to hit the ball.”
The stakes are high as players navigate their final opportunities for qualifying and securing their positions ahead of the prestigious Ryder Cup. With the Tour Championship underway and the British Masters concluding soon, the next few days will be crucial for many competitors aiming for glory.
