A memorial plaque has been unveiled at a bus stop in Castletroy, Limerick, to commemorate the life of Joe Drennan, a University of Limerick (UL) student who tragically lost his life on October 13, 2023. The plaque features a photograph of Joe, capturing his bright smile and distinctive long curls, symbolizing the warmth he brought to those around him.

The unveiling ceremony took place on Sunday and was attended by Joe’s family, friends, and local officials, including Cllr Catherine Slattery, the Príomh Chomhairleoir of Limerick City and County Council. The event drew attention from the community, with members of the Limerick Divisional Roads Policing Unit assisting by managing traffic to ensure a respectful atmosphere.

In her speech, Cllr Slattery reflected on Joe’s impact, stating, “Joe was an inspirational young man, talented and creative. He was loved and admired by all who knew him.” She emphasized the importance of remembering Joe through his infectious smile, which she hopes will continue to shine from the memorial plaque.

The plaque bears an inscription that reads: “In loving memory of Joe Drennan, forever 21 years young. A beloved son, brother, uncle, gifted journalist, and cherished friend tragically taken from us on October 13, 2023. Slán Abhaile. May you rest in peace on your journey home.”

As Cllr Slattery unveiled the plaque, warm applause resonated through the gathering, marking a poignant moment of remembrance. Joe’s sister, Sarah Drennan, expressed the family’s gratitude towards the council and specifically thanked Cllr Slattery for her dedication. She remarked, “Today means so much to our family as we unveil this plaque in memory of my brother Joe, who was taken from us far too soon at just 21.”

Sarah also acknowledged the support from the community, mentioning the contributions of various individuals and organizations that made the memorial possible. “Your kindness has given us a lasting tribute to Joe and a symbol of the love and support that has surrounded us since his passing,” she said.

The event highlighted Joe’s legacy not only as a student but also as a community member who touched many lives. Sarah thanked the staff of UL, the local police, and the team at La Cucina, where Joe worked and formed lasting friendships.

As family and friends gathered to honor Joe’s memory, Cllr Slattery’s remarks resonated deeply with all in attendance. The unveiling of the plaque serves as a powerful reminder of Joe Drennan’s life, his talents, and the love shared by those who knew him.
