BREAKING: A 50-year-old former referee has made history as the oldest probationer in An Garda Síochána, Ireland’s national police service. Michael Connolly, hailing from Aghyaran, Co Tyrone, was among 154 new gardai sworn in during a ceremony at the Garda College in Templemore, Co Tipperary, on Friday.

Connolly’s journey to this milestone began when he learned in December 2023 that the age limit for Garda recruits would be raised from 35 to 50. “I had one shot at it,” Connolly stated. He promptly applied in January 2024, navigating several challenges along the way.

His background as a League of Ireland referee, where he honed skills in conflict resolution and handling pressure, has given him confidence in his new role. Connolly expressed, “The conflict, dealing with people, the sanctions, the penalties, there’s so many aspects of refereeing that transfer naturally to being a garda.”

The graduation ceremony was a moment of celebration, attended by Connolly’s wife, three daughters, and other family members. In a heartwarming twist, a fellow probationer proposed to his girlfriend just before the graduation ceremony, adding to the day’s joy.

Among the other graduates was Hannah Egan, 19, from Co Laois, who followed in her father’s footsteps, stating, “It was all I wanted, I was set on it.” Another probationer, Caragh Byrne, 22, from Cork, echoed similar sentiments, having been inspired by her father’s career in the Garda.

Both Egan and Byrne expressed excitement about their new roles. Egan shared her eagerness to meet new people and help those in need, while Byrne highlighted the incredible training experience they received.

As the newly sworn-in members embark on their careers, the emotional significance of the day resonates deeply within the community. Connolly’s achievement not only marks a personal victory but also serves as an inspiration for aspiring officers across the nation.

Stay tuned for further updates on these inspiring new members of An Garda Síochána as they begin their important work in serving and protecting their communities.
