Michael D. Higgins Reflects on Presidency Ahead of Departure

URGENT UPDATE: As Michael D. Higgins prepares to leave the Áras an Uachtaráin in November 2023, the President of Ireland reflects on his nearly 14-year tenure and what lies ahead. Speaking on Second Captains Saturday on RTÉ Radio One, Higgins shared his plans for the future, emphasizing his commitment to important causes before his exit.
The outgoing president expressed enthusiasm for reading and spending time with his grandchildren, while also addressing significant ongoing projects. “There are projects I’m continuing abroad as well as at home,” Higgins stated, particularly focusing on the elimination of violence against women and advocating for the rights of the Traveller community.
Higgins also made headlines with his strong stance on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, recently declaring the situation a genocide and urging international intervention. “We’re at the realm of non-accountability,” he remarked, condemning actions from members of the Israeli Cabinet that he views as illegal. The President underscored the dire need for humanitarian access, calling for a UN mechanism under Chapter Seven to facilitate aid.
In a poignant moment, he recalled his experiences in Gaza, sharing how the trauma faced by Palestinian children is often rooted in the humiliation of their parents. This personal connection has driven his advocacy, emphasizing the human impact of the ongoing crisis.
Higgins also discussed his personal journey, describing himself as a “very bad hurler” growing up. He plans to return to his home in Rahoon, Co Galway, where he has been preparing by donating his extensive book collection to the University of Galway and local libraries.
With the presidential election approaching, Higgins refrained from commenting on potential successors but expressed hope for a smooth transition. “All I know is that I’ll do my best to have the place looking all right,” he said.
As his presidency draws to a close, Michael D. Higgins remains a compelling figure, advocating for peace and justice, while looking forward to a new chapter in his life. Stay tuned for further updates on Higgins’s final initiatives as President and their impact on Ireland and the world.
