Dublin Festival of History Launches with 250 Free Events NOW!

UPDATE: The Dublin Festival of History is set to kick off with an impressive lineup of 250 free events from September 26 to October 12, 2025. This year’s festival highlights critical topics including the centenary of the Irish Boundary Commission, the creation of the atomic bomb, and the legacy of renowned Irish figures.

The festival culminates in a spectacular Big Weekend at the Mansion House on September 27 and 28. Attendees can expect engaging presentations from notable historians and authors.

One of the standout events includes Cormac Moore discussing his book, The Root of All Evil: The Irish Boundary Commission. Moore reveals how a leaked report in 1925 dashed hopes for a united Ireland, a pivotal moment in Irish history.

Another highlight features Iain MacGregor, who will present The Hiroshima Men, shedding light on the individuals behind the atomic bomb’s creation and sharing powerful survivor testimonies.

Additionally, Kate Vigurs will unveil Mission Europe: The Secret History of the Women of Special Operations Executive, focusing on the extraordinary contributions of women in wartime.

The festival also includes Roger Moorhouse’s Wolfpack: Hitler’s U-boat War 1939–44, offering insights into life aboard German submarines during World War II.

In a unique presentation, author Nicola Pierce will explore the influence of ten remarkable women in her talk on Great Irish Wives, featuring figures such as Matilda Tone and Mary O’Connell.

The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Ray McAdam, emphasized the festival’s role in celebrating Dublin’s rich history: “Dublin has been shaped by the events, places, and people of its past, and this festival brings those stories to life.”

Deputy city librarian Brendan Teeling described this festival as an invaluable opportunity for both Dubliners and visitors to engage with history in new and exciting ways.
