Kerry GAA Extends Jack O’Connor’s Contract Through 2027

UPDATE: Kerry GAA has just confirmed the extension of Jack O’Connor’s contract as manager for another two years, solidifying his position until 2027. The decision, made during a board meeting on October 3, 2023, comes as the team aims to secure back-to-back All-Ireland titles for the first time in two decades.
O’Connor, who has led Kerry to five All-Ireland titles, recently clinched their 39th crown against Donegal, prompting calls from key players, including star forward David Clifford, for him to continue at the helm. Initially hinting at stepping down after the victory, O’Connor ultimately decided to stay following overwhelming support from his squad.
The existing backroom team, featuring Cian O’Neill, Aodán MacGearailt, James Costello, and Pa McCarthy, will remain intact as they gear up for the upcoming season, eyeing a historic 40th Sam Maguire title.
In related news, another pressing issue is set to be addressed at a special GAA Congress on October 4, 2023. A motion aimed at abolishing the All-Ireland preliminary Hurling quarter-finals will be reviewed, following criticism of one-sided matchups between third-place teams in each province and the Joe McDonagh Cup finalists. Since the introduction of these matches, lower-tier teams have struggled significantly, winning only 1 out of 12 Liam MacCarthy ties, with Laois’ victory over Dublin in 2019 being the lone success.
Stay tuned for more updates as these developments unfold, especially as Kerry prepares for a challenging season ahead under O’Connor’s experienced leadership.
