Met Éireann Issues Yellow Rain Warning for Six Counties

As the last days of August approach, a significant weather shift is underway in Ireland. Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow rain warning for six counties, including Clare, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, and Sligo. This warning is effective from 18:00 on August 27 until 18:00 on August 31.
The national weather service warns of considerable rainfall accumulations due to heavy showers and extended periods of rain, with isolated thunderstorms also predicted. Residents can expect potential impacts such as localized flooding, poor visibility, and challenging travel conditions.
Weather Forecast and Expected Conditions
In the northern and eastern regions, rainfall will be heavy early on August 27, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. However, this severe weather is expected to clear quickly, giving way to sunshine and scattered heavy showers throughout the day. The western counties will experience more prolonged rain and additional thunderstorms.
Temperatures today are predicted to reach between 16°C and 21°C. As night falls, heavy showers will continue, particularly in the west, where thundery rain and localized flooding are likely. In contrast, the eastern areas may see drier conditions, with nighttime temperatures dropping to between 10°C and 13°C.
Looking ahead to August 31, southeastern counties may experience a break in the rain, with drier and sunnier conditions. However, the rest of the country is expected to endure frequent showers and blustery winds, particularly in the northwest, where longer spells of rain and lightning may occur, potentially leading to further flooding. Daytime temperatures will range from 15°C to 20°C.
Continuing Unsettled Weather Ahead
According to Met Éireann, no significant improvement in the weather is anticipated for the remainder of the week. Forecasts indicate “very wet and rather rainy spells” in the days to come. On Friday, a mix of heavy showers and sunshine will prevail, especially in the northern half of Ireland, with the southeast likely to enjoy the warmest temperatures, ranging from 15°C to 21°C.
While there remains uncertainty in the forecast for the upcoming weekend, indications suggest potential for “significant rainfall and blustery winds,” particularly on Saturday, with daytime temperatures expected to hover in the mid to high teens. The early part of next week appears equally unsettled, with continued rain and showers anticipated.
As the weather evolves, residents are urged to stay informed about local conditions and prepare for possible disruptions due to adverse weather. Met Éireann continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary.
