URGENT: Deadly E. Coli in Camembert Cheese Sparks Recall

ALERT: A deadly E. coli threat has prompted the urgent recall of a popular Camembert cheese across Ireland. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) confirmed today that a specific batch of Gillot cru Petit Camembert cheese, produced in France, may be contaminated with a dangerous strain of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli.
Consumers are advised to check their refrigerators immediately. The affected cheese carries a best before date of 26.08.2025 and should not be consumed. The FSAI emphasizes that ingestion of this cheese could lead to severe health complications, including haemolytic uraemic syndrome, a serious condition that can destroy red blood cells and impair kidney function.
Children under five and the elderly are particularly susceptible to these harmful effects. Those who have already consumed the cheese may experience typical symptoms of an E. coli infection, including abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Generally, fever is minimal, and most individuals recover within five to ten days. The FSAI warns that symptoms may arise anywhere between one to eight days after consumption, with the average onset occurring three to four days post-ingestion.
This product has reportedly been sold primarily online, raising concerns about the potential spread of this contamination across households. The FSAI’s announcement follows a troubling trend this August, which has seen numerous food products recalled in Iceland, including fresh spinach and various ready-meals, marking a summer of increasing food safety alerts.
Consumers are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any health issues to their local health authorities. This ongoing situation highlights the critical importance of food safety and the need for immediate action to protect public health.
Stay tuned for further updates as more information becomes available. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely and will provide additional guidance as necessary. This is a developing story – we will keep you informed.
