Catherine Connolly Vows to Expand Presidential Role if Elected

On the other hand, Fine Gael has two hopefuls vying for the nomination: MEP Sean Kelly and former party deputy leader Heather Humphreys.

Connolly praised outgoing president Michael D Higgins for his courageous leadership, particularly regarding calls for peace in Ukraine and issues surrounding Palestine. She expressed admiration for former presidents Mary Robinson and Mary McAleese, stating, “All in their own way have expanded the role of president, and I would see myself as continuing that tradition.”
