Fianna Fail Faces Split as Billy Kelleher Enters Presidential Race
BREAKING: Fianna Fail is in turmoil as MEP Billy Kelleher has officially declared his candidacy for President, challenging the party’s leadership, which is rallying behind Jim Gavin, the celebrated Dublin GAA manager. This unexpected move comes amid mounting pressure and a looming election date of October 23.
Kelleher, the highest-ranking party member to announce his run, sent an email to all parliamentary party members, asserting his intention to secure support over the weekend. His campaign caught party leaders, including Taoiseach Micheal Martin, off guard, forcing them to scramble for support for Gavin, whom they had positioned as their candidate.
As tensions rise within the party, Kelleher is actively reaching out to TDs and senators, promising to share his “vision for the Presidency.” His unexpected entry into the race is a significant shift for Fianna Fail, which is now grappling with conflicting loyalties.
“Fianna Fail has a decision to make. I think Jim Gavin would be a fantastic candidate for Fianna Fail and, more importantly, for the country,” stated James Lawless, the first TD to nominate Gavin.
Meanwhile, former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has openly indicated he is not ruling out his own candidacy, expressing disappointment with the party’s leadership for not supporting him. Speaking at an event commemorating the 50th anniversary of Eamon de Valera‘s death, Ahern noted, “I never rule myself out. If you never rule yourself out, you’re still in.”
The race is heating up, with commentator Joe Brolly predicting that Gavin would win the presidential election “in a landslide” if nominated. Brolly emphasized Gavin’s popularity and integrity, claiming he would receive overwhelming support from GAA fans across the nation.
As the countdown to the presidential election begins, Fianna Fail must navigate this internal conflict. With Kelleher and Gavin both vying for support, it remains to be seen who will emerge as the party’s representative. The urgency of the situation is palpable, as political alliances shift and tensions mount within the party.
This developing story highlights the intense competition within Fianna Fail and the potential impact on Ireland’s upcoming presidential election. Stay tuned for more updates as the situation unfolds.
