Urgent Investigation: Irish Protester Punched by German Police
BREAKING: A shocking altercation during a Gaza protest in Berlin has led to an urgent investigation after 25-year-old Irish protester Kitty O’Brien was violently punched by a German police officer. Disturbing footage shows O’Brien being struck twice in the face, resulting in visible injuries as blood drips from her nose.
The incident occurred on Thursday, July 13, 2023, during a pro-Palestinian demonstration labeled as a “civil disobedience demonstration.” Eyewitnesses reported chaos as police responded aggressively to chants from the crowd. O’Brien was subsequently detained and led away from the scene, with footage circulating online capturing the aftermath as she showed blood on her hands to officers, stating, “This is on you, there’s blood on your hands.”
A spokesperson for the Berlin Police confirmed that the police oversight body has been instructed to review the incident to determine potential disproportionate actions or criminal relevance by the officers involved. The response has ignited protests in both Dublin and Derry, where demonstrators rallied against police violence over the weekend.
Irish Taoiseach Michael Martin expressed his deep concern regarding the incident, declaring such an assault as “unacceptable.” Meanwhile, the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it is prepared to provide consular assistance to O’Brien upon her request.
O’Brien was reportedly injured not only from the punch but also sustained a severe arm injury when police dragged her away from the protest. The Irish Bloc Berlin, a group to which she belongs, revealed that her right arm was twisted with such force it resulted in a broken bone. She was taken to Charité Hospital for treatment, where her condition is being monitored.
Witnesses described the atmosphere at the protest as extremely tense. Roisín Clarke, a fellow member of the Irish Bloc Berlin, highlighted that police were on high alert, conducting a wide-scale operation in anticipation of the protest. “They were checking if people coming out of the train stations were wearing keffiyehs,” she stated, emphasizing the police’s aggressive stance throughout the event.
The police reported that around 80 individuals were arrested during the protest for chanting “criminal, forbidden slogans.” In total, freedom-restricting measures were implemented against 94 people, with 96 criminal investigations initiated, although all were later released after their identities were verified.
As this story develops, the international community is watching closely, and further reactions are expected from Irish officials and activists alike. The implications of this incident raise significant questions about police conduct during protests and the treatment of individuals advocating for human rights.
