Speed Fibre Group Completes Urgent Acquisition of BT Communications Ireland

UPDATE: Speed Fibre Group has officially finalized its acquisition of BT Communications Ireland Ltd (BTCIL) as of September 1, 2025. This urgent move significantly enhances Speed Fibre Group’s telecommunications capabilities across Ireland, integrating BTCIL’s extensive network infrastructure and customer base.
The acquisition, first announced in February 2025, includes critical assets such as BTCIL’s domestic network, co-location facilities, and a robust wholesale and enterprise customer base. With this merger, Speed Fibre Group now boasts a network stretching nearly 10,000 km of fibre, connecting 94 towns and cities and servicing over 6,000 buildings, including more than 2,500 in Dublin and other major urban centers.
Peter McCarthy, CEO of Speed Fibre Group, emphasized the importance of this acquisition, stating, “Uniting BTCIL and Speed Fibre Group combines market heritage, knowledge, and scale, restoring vital competition in the telecommunications space at a national level.” This move is expected to unlock greater scalability and improved connectivity for customers nationwide, providing them with increased choice, better value, and superior service.
The acquisition aligns with Speed Fibre Group’s long-term strategy to future-proof Ireland’s telecommunications infrastructure, catering to the growing demands of sectors like AI, pharma, and cloud services that require high-speed, reliable connectivity. This strategic growth is crucial as Ireland’s digital economy continues to expand.
Steven Marshall, chairman of Cordiant Digital Infrastructure, the parent company of Speed Fibre Group, called the acquisition a “fantastic synergy” between two leading market players in Ireland. He believes this will enhance operational efficiency and competitiveness, paving the way for innovative, value-driven solutions for customers.
This acquisition comes on the heels of the Competition & Consumer Protection Commission clearing another significant telecommunications deal: the acquisition of BT Datacentres Ireland by Equinix for an estimated €59 million earlier in August.
As Speed Fibre Group integrates BTCIL’s assets, the telecommunications landscape in Ireland is poised for a transformative shift, promising to bolster the digital economy and support GDP growth. Stakeholders and customers alike are eager to see the enhanced offerings and improved services that will emerge from this significant acquisition.
Stay tuned for more updates as Speed Fibre Group continues to evolve its services and expand its reach across Ireland’s telecommunications market.
