Shane Lowry Named in Luke Donald’s Ryder Cup Picks for 2025

UPDATE: In a significant announcement today, Shane Lowry has been officially named as one of the six Captain’s Picks by European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald for the much-anticipated competition against the USA. This event is set to take place at the iconic Bethpage Black in Farmington, New York, from September 26-28, 2025.
Lowry, a veteran of two previous Ryder Cups, joins an impressive lineup including Ludvig Åberg, Matt Fitzpatrick, Viktor Hovland, Jon Rahm, and Sepp Straka. Together, they will complement the six automatic qualifiers, making up a formidable 12-man European team poised to defend their title.
The six automatic qualifiers are Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton, Rasmus Højgaard, Robert MacIntyre, Rory McIlroy, and Justin Rose. Notably, McIlroy stands out as the most experienced player, entering his seventh Ryder Cup.
Donald emphasized the strength and unity of the team: “We are a settled and united team with a strong culture, with 11 of the 12 players from the victory in Rome returning, and an exciting, talented rookie in Rasmus Højgaard, who was around our team environment in Rome.”
He continued, “Although the team itself is similar to Rome, I have approached this captaincy from a very different angle. A different challenge requires different thinking and strategies. I’m excited that we now have our 12 players in place, and together we are all fully focused on trying to retain the Ryder Cup in New York and trying to create history.”
Among the new faces, Åberg and Straka will be making their away Ryder Cup debuts, having participated in their first competition during the European victory two years ago in Rome. Hovland, who previously teamed up with Åberg for a record-breaking foursomes win, will be making his third consecutive appearance.
As anticipation builds for the showdown in New York, fans and analysts alike are eager to see how this dynamic team will perform against the formidable USA squad. This Ryder Cup promises to be a thrilling chapter in golf history, with Lowry and his teammates prepared to face the challenge head-on.
Mark your calendars for September 26-28, 2025, and stay tuned for more updates as the competition draws nearer!
