New Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly Prioritizes National Security
URGENT UPDATE: New Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly has just announced his commitment to enhancing national security and expanding the use of Tasers among frontline officers. At his inaugural press conference on October 3, 2023, Kelly emphasized the need for increased police visibility to combat rising concerns around anti-social behavior and crime.
Kelly, who took over the role on October 2, 2023, expressed his gratitude, stating it is a “huge privilege” to serve in this capacity. He revealed that while some units currently use Tasers, he is considering a broader implementation through a pilot program. “We won’t rush into it,” he cautioned, indicating a careful evaluation process ahead.
In a clear message about prioritizing public safety, Kelly highlighted the importance of engaging with victims of crime, especially those affected by domestic violence. He stated, “We need to get our engagement with the public right every time,” underscoring the urgency of respectful and professional interactions with citizens.
To tackle issues of crime and enhance community safety, Kelly plans to implement a full rollout of body-worn cameras for officers. He remarked on the need for Gardaí to be equipped adequately to handle potentially dangerous situations, citing increasing reports of officer injuries. “It’s really important that they have everything they need to protect themselves,” he asserted.
Kelly also addressed the pressing issue of national security amidst a “volatile geopolitical environment.” He stated, “We are living in very uncertain times… it’s absolutely vital that we have all the capabilities in place to protect us from these threats.” His comments reflect a growing concern over Ireland’s vulnerabilities, despite being an island nation.
Furthermore, Kelly aims to “reset” relations with the representative bodies for members of An Garda Síochána, indicating a commitment to improve internal collaboration and support. He expressed appreciation for his predecessor, Drew Harris, acknowledging his service as he enters retirement.
As the new Commissioner sets these priorities, the public will be watching closely for developments in Garda operations and their impact on community safety. This is a pivotal moment for law enforcement in Ireland, and Kelly’s leadership will be crucial in navigating these challenges.
