UPDATE: A mother has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after shocking CCTV footage revealed her injecting her toddler son with insulin. Alexandra Marie Frost, 27, from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was convicted for endangering her child’s life, following a series of alarming medical incidents that began in March 2023.

The case unfolded when Frost brought her two-year-old son to the hospital, where medical staff discovered dangerously low blood sugar levels that required immediate treatment. Health professionals at the University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital noticed a troubling pattern in the child’s glucose readings, leading them to suspect a serious condition known as Munchausen syndrome by proxy. This condition involves caregivers creating or exaggerating medical symptoms in their children for attention or sympathy.

In response to their suspicions, hospital staff installed a camera in the boy’s room. On August 29, 2023, the CCTV captured Frost using a syringe to inject her son in the foot. Witnesses reported that the child became visibly agitated and screamed in pain immediately after the injection, which was confirmed to be insulin. Medical professionals informed investigators that such injections could dangerously lower glucose levels, potentially leading to severe health risks, including death.

Investigators noted that Frost was the only individual present with her son during his five-day hospital stay. In June, she pleaded guilty to charges of child endangerment resulting in bodily injury and administering harmful substances. In a decisive ruling, Sixth Judicial District Judge Mike Harris sentenced her to the maximum term of ten years, with each of her charges carrying a sentence of five years to be served consecutively.

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services has since removed the child from Frost’s care. Remarkably, he has shown no further issues with his glucose levels since the incident, indicating a positive turn in his health following his mother’s conviction.

This case highlights an urgent and distressing issue of child safety and the complexities of parental mental health. As authorities continue to monitor the situation, this story serves as a reminder of the critical need for vigilance in protecting vulnerable children.
