A tragic incident occurred on March 15, 2024, when a funicular in Lisbon, known as the Gloria Funicular, crashed, resulting in the deaths of **16 individuals**, including **Kayleigh Gillian Smith**, 36, and **William Nelson**, 44, a couple from the United Kingdom. Just hours before the disaster, the couple shared holiday photographs on social media, capturing their exploration of the Portuguese capital.
The Gloria Funicular, a popular tourist attraction, reportedly lost control due to a damaged cable, careening down a steep slope before colliding with a structure. Eyewitnesses described the crash as devastating, with one witness stating, “It crashed into a building with brutal force and fell apart like a cardboard box.” Another spectator noted that the funicular was moving at an abnormal speed, prompting people nearby to flee in panic as it approached them.
Among the **16 fatalities**, there were **three British nationals**, five Portuguese citizens, and individuals from South Korea, Canada, the United States, Ukraine, Switzerland, and France. In addition, **22 others sustained injuries** from the incident. The scale of the tragedy has drawn widespread attention, with officials and citizens mourning the loss of life.
Kayleigh and William had only arrived in Portugal a day prior to the accident. They documented their visit on social media, sharing images of Lisbon’s iconic tiled buildings and vibrant street art. One photograph even featured the very tramcar that would later be involved in the tragedy. A close friend of Kayleigh, **Lesley Guymer**, described her as a “quirky lady” and praised William as a “magnificent man,” emphasizing the deep affection felt for both.
The Portuguese authorities are conducting an investigation into the crash. **Simon Harris**, the Irish Deputy Prime Minister, expressed his condolences, stating, “I am deeply saddened by reports of a tragic incident in Lisbon. This is a terrible day for the city.” He assured that Ireland’s embassy in Lisbon is prepared to offer assistance to those affected.
**Luís Montenegro**, Portugal’s Prime Minister, characterized the crash as “one of the biggest tragedies in recent history.” Local media coverage has highlighted the gravity of the event, with many calling for a thorough examination of the safety protocols in place for tourist attractions.
As the investigation unfolds, the families of the victims are left to grapple with the sudden loss of their loved ones. The community in Lisbon, known for its warmth and hospitality, is coming together to support those impacted by this heartbreaking incident.
