Letterkenny University Hospital Cancels Elective Surgeries Amid ED Strain

The Emergency Department at Letterkenny University Hospital (LUH) is facing significant pressure, leading to the cancellation of some elective surgeries. On September 10, 2025, the hospital reported that 164 individuals attended the Emergency Department, with similar numbers expected the following day. As of 16:30 local time today, 84 patients were present in the Emergency Department, and 19 were awaiting admission.

In light of the overwhelming demand, the hospital has advised that patients seeking routine or non-urgent treatment will experience extended waiting times. All available beds are currently occupied, which hampers the ability to admit patients from the Emergency Department to inpatient wards. The hospital is prioritizing urgent and time-sensitive cases, while patients whose elective procedures are postponed are being informed directly.

The situation is compounded by the presence of COVID-19 outbreaks in two wards, prompting the hospital to restrict visiting hours. Visits are only allowed in special circumstances and must be pre-approved by the ward manager.

The hospital’s management recognizes the distress and inconvenience these delays cause for patients and their families. They emphasize a commitment to treating all individuals who present at the Emergency Department. Patients with serious injuries or illnesses will be assessed and treated as a priority, while those with non-urgent needs may face longer wait times.

Patients are encouraged to seek alternative care options, such as local General Practitioners or out-of-hours services, before attending the Emergency Department. In addition, all visitors to the hospital are required to follow strict hygiene protocols, including regular hand sanitization and wearing face masks, which are provided throughout the facility.

The hospital urges the public to check the Health Service Executive (HSE) website for guidance on managing common ailments such as colds and flu to alleviate some of the pressure on the Emergency Department.

As the situation develops, LUH continues to prioritize patient care and safety amid these unprecedented challenges.
