Urgent Warning: Kilkenny Residents Fear Explosive Nighttime Gangs

UPDATE: Growing fears over nighttime gang activity and dangerous fireworks are gripping residents in Kilkenny and Callan. Local political representatives are demanding urgent action as anti-social behavior escalates, creating a climate of fear in these communities.
Residents report ongoing disturbances, including teenagers gathering late at night on a local school’s pitch while fireworks explode in surrounding estates. This alarming trend has reached the city center, prompting locals to appeal for immediate and effective measures. As one business owner, Aisling Doyle, expressed, the community feels ignored despite repeatedly voicing their concerns.
“No effective measures have been taken,” Doyle told Kilkenny Live.
Local councillors are sounding the alarm. Cllr Eugene McGuinness condemned the reckless use of fireworks, stating, “I can see animals running left, right and centre.” He described some fireworks as “deadly dangerous,” warning that it’s only a matter of time before someone is injured, either from the fireworks themselves or from the reckless behavior of those setting them off.
With Halloween approaching, McGuinness anticipates a “massive explosion” of illegal fireworks as groups of children organize displays. “It’s going to be a disaster right across the town,” he warned, emphasizing that the culprits “don’t care.” He labeled the situation as “a planned assault on communities,” noting that the thrill of evading consequences gives these groups a dangerous “buzz.”
“At the level it’s gone to now, it’s dynamite and deadly dangerous,” McGuinness stated.
Deputy Mayor Cllr Maria Dollard echoed these sentiments, highlighting the distress and anxiety caused by the disruptive noise. “This is causing a nuisance and extreme distress to residents and their pets in the area,” she said. “People are anxious and upset in their own homes.” She criticized traditional fireworks as “dirty, polluting, upsetting and old hat,” calling for alternatives to address the ongoing issues.
As residents brace for a potentially hazardous Halloween season, officials are urging parents and community members to take action. The escalating situation calls for immediate intervention from authorities to restore peace and safety in Kilkenny.
What happens next? Residents, officials, and law enforcement will be closely monitoring the situation as they seek solutions to prevent further incidents. With tensions running high, community leaders are pushing for stronger enforcement of existing laws to deter this reckless behavior before it spirals further out of control.
