Innovative Dad Cuts €421 Off Electric Bill with Smart Technology

URGENT UPDATE: Households in Ireland brace for significant electricity price hikes starting next month, prompting innovative strategies to cut costs. Bord Gáis Energy and Pinergy have confirmed price increases for residential customers, with Bord Gáis implementing a staggering 13.5% rise on standard unit rates and a 12% increase on standing charges effective October 12. This change could add an alarming €18.16 per month, or €218 annually, to the average household electricity bill.
In a similar move, Pinergy will raise prices by 9.83% from October 13, translating to an additional cost of €199 each year based on average consumption. As these hikes loom, one father in the UK has revealed a smart solution that could save Irish households hundreds.
David Miles, a 46-year-old dad from Essex, has successfully utilized smart technology to monitor his energy consumption, leading to a stunning discovery about his old appliances. Using a smart plug, he tracked the energy usage of each device in his home. The results were eye-opening.
“It tells me how much power each appliance is consuming at any given time and its average daily consumption,” Miles explained. The ability to turn devices on and off remotely has also allowed him to eliminate unnecessary energy usage while away from home.
The most shocking revelation came from his 25-year-old American-style fridge freezer, which accounted for a staggering one-fifth of his total electricity bill. Over a year, this appliance consumed an astonishing 1,600 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity, costing him approximately €562 annually based on current rates.
With electricity costs averaging 35.14c per kWh in Ireland, Miles noted that replacing his outdated fridge could save him at least €421 a year. New energy-efficient fridge freezers, priced between €404 and €2,310, typically consume a maximum of 400 kWh per year, costing around €141 annually.
“Upgrading my fridge freezer will pay for itself in two or three years, plus I will also slash my home’s carbon footprint,” he added, highlighting the dual benefits of cost savings and environmental responsibility.
As Irish families prepare for rising energy costs, innovative solutions like Miles’ could be pivotal. The urgency to adapt to these changes is clear, as energy providers confirm that without action, households will feel the financial strain.
