Innovative Dad Cuts €421 from Electricity Bill Amid Price Hikes

URGENT UPDATE: Households across Ireland face significant energy bill hikes as providers announce increases starting this October. Bord Gáis Energy will implement a staggering 13.5% rise on standard unit rates and a 12% increase on standing charges from October 12, 2023. For typical customers, this translates to an additional €18.16 per month, totaling €218 annually. Pinergy follows suit, raising costs by 9.83% from October 13, 2023, adding approximately €199 yearly based on average consumption.
In this climate of rising costs, one innovative father from Essex, David Miles, has revealed how smart technology can dramatically reduce energy expenses. The 46-year-old dad utilized a smart plug to monitor his household appliances and discovered surprising results that could inspire others to take action.
David stated, “It tells me how much power each appliance is consuming at any given time and its average daily consumption.” This tech not only tracks energy usage but also allows him to control devices remotely, significantly lowering unnecessary energy consumption when he is not home.
Shocking findings emerged from his investigation, particularly with his aged American-style fridge freezer, which accounted for a staggering 20% of his total electricity bill. David commented, “Incredibly, it ate up a fifth of my entire electricity bill.” Over the course of a year, his fridge consumed 1,600 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity. To put this into perspective, he noted, “The same as our friend’s hot tub.”
Current rates in Ireland stand at 35.14c per kWh, indicating that maintaining this old fridge alone costs around €562 annually. However, upgrading to a modern fridge freezer can yield substantial savings. With new models priced between €404 and €2,310, most contemporary units utilize a maximum of 400 kWh annually, equating to an estimated €141 in running costs.
By replacing his outdated appliance, David calculates he could save at least €421 per year, making the upgrade a financially savvy choice. He emphasized, “Upgrading my fridge freezer will pay for itself in two or three years, plus I will also slash my home’s carbon footprint.”
As energy prices continue to surge, David’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of technology and informed choices on household bills. Will more families follow his lead to combat rising costs? Stay tuned for updates as consumers across Ireland and beyond explore innovative solutions to manage their energy expenses in this challenging economic environment.
